JEWS ON VINYL - On view now through September 5, 2010
Popular Music Project director Josh Kun curated this multisensory exhibition with Roger Bennett (his coauthor on the 2008 book, And You Shall Know Us By the Trail of Our Vinyl) from their vast and painstakingly-gathered collections of vinyl LPs found in attics, garage sales, and dusty archives. These once loved, and now nearly forgotten audio gems offer a new musical tale: the story of Jews in America.
Set in a retro 1950s-style living room equipped with listening stations, this exhibition (which includes amazing and amusing album art) traces Jewish recorded music from the 1940s to the 1980s, offering lost moments in pop history and new perspectives on Jewish identity.
